I’ve always left things a little open to interpretation. While I wouldn’t say “hits” are a critical benchmark for artist (or the album from which an album is chosen), I would say the artist should have a chance of having been heard of by a somewhat broad-minded listener – with the tracks that received some airplay not being the deep cuts.

I think B-sides, rarities, obscure artists could be fodder for other, future rounds.

I will say that I was already thinking deep catalogue, as opposed to deep album, for one of my selections. I used to say that I had “the album before they were popular.”
