Wombats – never heard any of their music. if I had to describe this to somebody, possibly a mix of the psychedelic furs and death cab for cutie? I think, I heard like two of their songs, the one is crooked teeth. I don’t know what I am talking about.
Rolling Stones, The preacher on the radio told me to send him my money and all my dreams would come true, so I did.
Wombats- Love The Wombats! Saw them open for Panic at the Disco and I think they won the battle that day. This one does not sound a lot like their other songs– a little more reserved and deliberate, but all in the service of a nice little tasty package. Hints of Death Cab in the beginning with a sprinkle of The Wonder Stuff. Fine playing and fun all around. And who cares what it means!
Stones- I absolutely love Mick and Keith’s harmonies here. Aside from that, I did not find this track particularly appealing. Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of Mick’s crooning, and even less fond of his twangy, whiney (winey?) country delivery. For some reason when he invokes American dialects it bothers me, whereasI let McCartney and Clapton slide.
The Wombats – Cheetah Tongue
1st thought like a lot of the new-er/ish stuff of a certain ilk I’ve heard (for me that could mean within the last decade) – Ian touched on Death Cab… plus there’s Phoenix, Dutch Uncles (a favorite), Two Door Cinema Club, Young the Giant (daughter-introduced), the Trial Round’s Portugal. The Man – even The Bird and the Bee somewhat (see Polite Dance Song or Love Letter to Japan).
It stands out just enough. The production makes the track here – on close listen, all the little fun bits are revealed (I go by Little Fun Bit on alternate Saturdays): the tasty bass, percussive dots and vocal swatches. Ultimately, I think the song is forgettable, but I wouldn’t skip it if it came on & I may even “move” a bit (and I think Ian got the Psychedelic Furs bit right – or maybe he just planted it subliminally – in an unnoticeable way)
The Rolling Stones – Far Away Eyes
My first thought on this one? My Liz would hate it. Country-ish with Mick Jagger vocalizing – only Willie Nelson might make it worse for her.
For moi? A cheeky track not unlike some of the Cracker forays into similar territory. A rambling mess of a song really – but isn’t that part of what makes the Stones lovable? Pull up a bar stool, grab a drink of choice and croon along!
Mick Jagger in a car listening to an a.m religious station. Yup, I can picture it now. Not a fan of this style of music but the “tongue and cheek” of the lyrics and his southern accent make the whole package work.
Wombats, “Cheetah Tongue”. had heard of them, never heard ’em. Like it. simple but effective guitar part, hip-hoppish beat. nice melody. points for finger snaps. I still don’t know what a “cheetah tongue” is (“cheat-ah tongue”?) — and what’s with “black flamingos cryin’ for ya”? — but it’s a nice l’il track.
Le Stones / “Far Away Eyes”. Among Stones tracks from their best albums (and “some girls” is up there) this has always been one of my least favorites. The slide playing is nice, and the chorus melody is gorgeous, but I always cringe a bit at Mick’s hick spoofing. (Dude, don’t punch down. Most unseemly). “Dear Doctor” from “beggar’s banquet” takes a kinder approach to a similar theme without sacrificing any humor.
Wombats – Sounded like modern pop to me. Not having the millennial whoop in it really helped it a lot. I was waiting for it, but thankfully it never came.
Stones – Not one that I’d ever list if you asked me about greatest stones songs. Not a dig, just fairly unknown to me. I listened to this a few months ago while listening to the whole album. Slow and enjoyable with some humorous lyrics. Helps that I was listening to Johnny Cash this morning. It put me in the mood for this one.

Sorry for the late response on this. Just came off our membership drive here and able to resurface.
The Wombats:
Fun little piece of pop music. I will need to find more of their stuff.
Stones:
This is one of my three favourite Stones songs (Moonlight Mile and Dead Flowers being the others). Not my selection, but nice call.
