IG – Liked a bunch of Iggy Pop Songs, never owned any albums, or dug any deeper than what was played on the radio until the album Brick by Brick showed up in My Five. After that I dug a little deeper and enjoyed what I found.
JH – Really like this song, never heard of the artist before. Think i’ll dig a little into this collection, see what I find.
Iggy Pop – The Passenger
Jangly backdrop with Iggy relaying the details in his raspy/gruff/gravelly voice. Just taking it all in. There is some nice color here – backing vocals, bass. “All of it was made for you and me… .. So let’s take a ride and see what’s mine.”
Note: I read that this was partly inspired by riding around in a car on a tour with David Bowie (Iggy didn’t drive).
John Hiatt – Memphis in the Meantime
Bring the Family brought some well-deserved attention to this long-respected songwriter. This song chugs wonderfully and his clever twist of lyrics paint a picture. Jim Keltner putting in his unique percussive touch. His voice is not pretty, but he knows how to work it. “Right now I need a Telecaster through a Vibrolux turned up to 10.” File under “Toe Tapper.”
“The Passenger” /Iggy. Wondered whether someone would cue this one up. One of those classic songs that’s just the same hypnotic chord progression over and over, ridden by Ig’s coffin-nails baritone. “We’ll see the city’s ripped-back sides!” No instrumental solo, either, so the only development is in the lyrics, which change only subtly from verse to verse, but somehow it works. I like the unexpected places the crash cymbal clocks in.
“Memphis in the Meantime” / John Hiatt. Johnny! this album was my intro to him, back when it came out, with its all-star backing band (Cooder, Keltner, Lowe — pretty good). This song leads off the album, if I recall. “one more heartfelt steel-guitar chord, girl, it’s gonna do me in”. Characteristically wry lyrics offset by that great percolating guitar. It’s rare that an M5 week is two songs I’m so familiar with, but this too is a nice pick.
“The Passenger” by Iggy Pop: very live sounding. Always love his voice timbre. La, la, la ,la ,la ,la……..yup. Delivers on the sense of riding through the streets and starry sky. La,la,la,la,la,la,la……yup. Nice ride.
“Memphis in the Meantime” by John Hiatt: This song sounded very familiar to me. Looked in my music files and did not find….perhaps in an old mix tape? Love the Hiatt style. Perhaps this is what feels familiar. The song sits in the pocket oh so nice…and draws you in until you can’t help but start tappin to the beat. Let’s go to Memphis.
follow up note: yes…totally agree with Ed’s toe tappin comment…I looked down and that is what mine kept doing…it won’t stop…heading to the emergency room now
