“Goin’ Mobile” / Le Who. I’d call it a prototypical acoustic-guitar-driven rocker if Moon’s drum part weren’t a virtual track-length drum solo. A fun one, and a welcome light-hearted diversion on “Who’s Next,” most of which is considerably more somber.
“Brand New Cadillac” / Le Clash. Great li’l rootsy cover that memorably slotted second on “London Calling,” loosening things up after the apocalyptic title track. The 1959 original was perhaps the best pre-Beatles British rock song, recorded by proto-Brit rocker Vince Taylor, who — well, it’s quite a story, look him up (he was also Bowie’s inspiration for Ziggy Stardust). Anyhow, the Clash liked to play it to warm up, but their madman “London Calling” producer, Guy Stevens, insisted they record it for the LP, and he was hardly wrong. “Balls to you, Daddy!”
Going Mobile-I may well have submitted these two songs. Goin Mobile from Who’s Next is like mother’s milk to me. Before listening to it this time my memory took me back to Keith Moon’s amazing drum work. There really is no rhyme or reason to it. It is so unconventional and so brilliant. But the nice surprises here include Pete’s dynamic acoustic guitar work and the weird synth jobber near the end. Toast and tea always sounds appealing.
The Clash- Maybe a perfect song. Great drive and rhythm. Killer hook. Tasty lead parts along with those throaty vocals- Strummer I believe.
Who – great tune, you can never go wrong with the Who.
Clash – Wish I had gotten into the clash more. I still don’t think I have ever listened to this entire album. know mostly the hits and Brand New Cadillac was one of them.
The Who – Goin’ Mobile
Spritely guitar, ebullient bass and energetic drumming makes me think of Doobies Brothers (their Long Train Runnin’ is in this week’s Spotified from Pandora list – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/72keGNHBIE9yCGwb35gaMg?si=HZWo6kOEQ1mEOsnzucFk2g).
Very enjoyable to hear this one. I seem to get more tracks from Quadrophenia than any other album on my Pandora shuffle. Jam on!
The Clash – Brand New Cadillac
Another treat. Got that Secret Agent Man vibe. I sense danger! Letting their hair down (if punks can do that).
I hear the beginning notes of Jimmy Jazz.
“Goin’ Mobile”by The Who: I believe the Who were one of the first users of the mobile cell phone back in the day. bada boom. Feel like this is one of the well played radio songs in the Who catalogue. I loved the Who’s ability to provide such a great mix, big loud bass and drum floor and powerful guitar sound when I was growing up that other bands I heard on the radio could not deliver. I still enjoy but their sound has lost the magic lustre they once had with me; at least lately. Hopefully this will be temporary. Enjoyed and this song fits that bill but I just do not lean in like I used to.
“Brand New Cadillac” by The Clash: Bit of a surfer batman vibe. Great driving energy.
