Jimi – you can never go wrong with Jimi. Perfect song for this morning. I kind of wore Jimi out listening to him constantly, think Its about time to put him back into rotation.
CM – Another perfect song for this morning. Never heard of this guy but 2 seconds in I am adding him to my Amazon Music playlist. There is only so much John Coltrane a person can listen to on a Saturday Morning… I usually listen to jazz while waking up and making breakfast. Unfortunately the John Coltrane channel on Pandora basically plays the same songs anymore, or after years of listening, I have heard them all
“GG Train” / Mingus. Funny coincidence, as I’ve been getting into Mingus myself for the past year or so. He has catchier tracks, but this one is typically lively, driving, and rhythmically complex (his go-to drummer, Dannie Richmond, is fantastic). Plus, nice to get an instrumental in here now and again.
Jimi Hendrix – Spanish Castle Magic
From my favorite Hendrix record – Axis: Bold As Love. Unfamiliar with this version, but it keeps what I love about it and JHs work. There’s the stellar, innovative guitar work of course – an inspiration for many (including early Scorpions guitarist and songwriter Uli Jon Roth), but this one would be a standout track without it. The intro grabs ya and then the verse is sparse before the chorus lights it up. Man I need to crank this one up, outside the headphones, at some point. Glad I listened to the Mingus track first.
Charles Mingus – GG Train
Have only mingled with Mingus – need to be more mindful of his work. This one is a workout. Very enjoyable – leaves me a little tired, but in a good way. Peppy – a nice segue to the next round.
“Spanish Castle Magic” by Jimi Hendrix: starts off exactly like a Jimi Hendrix song. Smokin’ guitar playing. This one really showcases his unique style and virtuosity. One could argue its heavy handed guitar playing however he can get away with it. Wow….takes it to next level
