SK – the first time I heard of this group was when Henry Rollins Mentioned them, somehow I never really took a good listen (prob because all this streaming music wasn’t available) I am going to have to put this on my amazon music list. I liked it a lot, Looks like they started right after I was leaving my “all-girl” band music and was diving into industrial bands such as NIN, KMFDM, and the like. Definitely going to give a few albums a listen.
SR – Never heard of him.. Like it, this is a song I would expect to find on a Tarintino soundtrack. (He is a master of interesting music) Instrumental in the middle is awesome and quite strange. I’ll have to dig a little deeper on this one as well
Sleater-Kinney – Light Rail Coyote
I’ve liked what I’ve heard from this band. They have a hard edge, but temper it with some pop flair – not unlike Liz Phair at her best. Great rhythm section work. The guitar in the poppy part almost sounds vibe-like – is there a little keyboard in there? A little B-52s wailing towards the end. Hard time picking out some of the lyrics – strikes me as kind of a painting of a place. A keeper.
Rodriguez – Sugar Man
Know the “legend” more than the music. I’ve heard a track here and there. Nice use of instrumentation in what could be a standard late sixties-early seventies track. A little psychedelia in there is certainly appreciated by me. Nice pick.
“Sugar Man” / Rodriguez. I remember hearing this guy’s story (estimable American talent finds early audience overseas, obscurity at home; rediscovered decades later) when the film about him came out some years ago. This is the first full song I’ve heard though. Good stuff, strong early-70s post-psychedelia vibe. Like his singing, laid-back but wised up, and the evocative cautionary-tale lyrics. (presuming the M5 theme is satisfied by the “silver magic ships” and metaphorical “trips”.) It’s potent how the effects come off the vocals in the last verse.
Sleater- They just rolled into Philly this week opening for Wilco. Never really listened to them back in the day though they swam in those indie waters with REM and Pixies. I like the intensity of this tune as varies between rhythms and riffy and pulsing guitars. A little more punch than their contemps like Throwing Muses. Good stuff.
Sugar Man- Wait. “Mary Jane?” “Coke?” Sugar? Like Brown Sugar? Weird sounds? Was that an oboe? I love how it comes back out of the weirdness with the straight up singing and strumming. Great melody. I think hs dies at the end. Sorry.
“Light Rail Coyote”by Sleater-Kinney: lo-fi garage band sound that sits just right. I like the bridge at about 1:40 in. The round, and harmonies with the guitar picking are kind of cool. Big screams towards the end add that final icing on cake for me. Fun One
