Jets- A gentle start for this meandering prog tune. For some reason it reminded me of “Lucky Man”. Is there a sub-genre of English prog about battles/war? Anyway, the gentleness gives way to some serious guitar work tbat connotes an array of post-conflict imagery (to me).
Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Am pretty familiar with this one. The vocals are an acquired taste – reminiscent of Violent Femmes or Jeremy Enigk. (Is that saw or whistling I hear in there? – that brings to mind Andrew Bird’s work). Ashes doing the traveling. I missed the horn (French?) on the first listen – nice touch. Disarray towards the end maintains interest. Chock full.
[Aside: “Oh, ‘an aeroplane’. Oh, I say, we are grand, aren’t we?”]
Be-Bop Deluxe – Jets at Dawn
For the first time in record Ed history, I didn’t queue this up on this past August 1st – so am thankful that randomnumber.org saw fit to include it among the first tracks of this round. Off a pretty solid debut record, Axe Victim, it is a standout track. Bill Nelson adds lilting guitar color throughout – then he just lets fly.
“In the Airplane Over The Sea” / NMH. Like many others, I was deeply impressed on first hearing this song (and album) lo these many years ago. What you can do to make a basic acoustic strum sound brand-new with a great melody, striking lyrics and some well-placed French horn and sound effects. “I can’t believe how strange it is to be anything at all.” I actually hadn’t thought about this one for a while. Great pick.
“Jets At Dawn” / Be Bop Deluxe. I know this band almost entirely from its memorably quirky moniker. Proggy. This one sounds like , thought quite possibly isn’t, part of a concept album about a war. maybe WWII? probably depends on the significance of that Aug. 1 date. Track is a little discursive for my taste, but the concluding guitar solo is nice.
“In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel: Bit of a quirky, odd sounding ditty with all kinds of curious sound effects sprayed about. Horns add to that slightly slanted atmosphere too. Singing style throws one off the beaten path a tad but I kind of like it. Enjoyed this one and need to give it more spins at opportunity. I will say it sounded familiar so I have either played this before, it’s been shared before or I could be imagining all that.
“Jets at Dawn” by Be Bop Deluxe: I heard the sound of the plane at the front end, so that makes it an official fit into this round. Now as it begins to play I have definitely heard this recently. Curious if this was submitted in an earlier round or discussed in some forum already (I’ll need to phone a friend to help with that answer). Lovely reflective, uplifting atmosphere that sounds so very hopeful. Enjoyed the subtle guitar riffing that accompanied the main lyrics and backup vocals. Adds much interest. Riffing at tail end of song also well done. Enjoyed a bunch.
two groups I have never heard of… Good pairing by Ed, they both have a similar feel.
NMH – This I really enjoyed, I think it sounds like Death Cab mixed with Cake.
BBD – Kind of sounds like a mellow David Bowie before he was cool. Very simple song.
