  1. The Sneetches – Over ’round Each Other
Beatle-esque swirling. Rubber soul era? Tasty from start to finish with an irresistible groove. Popfection!
    Also: Good use of handicaps.
And: I kept trying to listen more closely to the lyrics which seem to hint to daydreaming – travel to the clouds, but I kept drifting with the swirl.

    Kraftwerk – Autobahn
Love this track, but, at a hefty 22:47, you’ve certainly got be ready to settle in – so I’m putting down my tablet and closing my eyes at the 3-minute mark…
…I traveled somewhere along the bouncy groove. Rewards (requires?) a headphone listen or being pumped through quality speakers.
    Ausgezeichnet!

  2. “Over Round Each Other” / Sneetches. Remembered hearing about these guys in the 80s; correctly or not, they are linked in my mind with the Hoodoo Gurus. Listening now, aside from obvious Beatleisms, there’s a vibe Ben Folds mighta picked up on. Tuneful and pleasant, with a nice guitar sting at the end.

“Autobahn” / Kraftwerk. An iconic pick for this round, by the electronica pioneers who were an influence on early hip hop and more. By coincidence, I belatedly checked out their oeuvre some months back and I know I’ve heard this song at some point, but I do NOT recall it being longer than “Inna Gadda Da Vida,” or indeed, than many trips on the autobahn itself. Is this like a director’s cut? (OK, I see that there was also a single version, that’s probably what I heard.) I have also been listening to their Krautrock contemporaries Can lately; along with the electronics, lots of similar gravitation toward the long form. Here, there’s some interest in seeing what they’re going to throw in next to keep things going, but really, any 6 minutes would have been plenty. Maybe it should’ve been a trilogy, like “Dune”!

  3. Sneetches- Beatles-esque, pseudo-psychedelic, mildly rollicking, Robyn Hitchcock-ish, Matthew Sweet-like guitar. This band is full of homages. Not a bad bit of fun stuff for the ears. Some of the individual parts are also fun—raggy piano in the background, solid electric guitar lead.

Kraftwerk –(Just heard a song on the way into work today by The Felice Brother called “Jazz on the Autobahn”). So many thoughts on this one (it gives one a lot of time to think. Here are a sampling:

-I wish I could have heard this when it came out. What would I have thought in 1975?

-What kind of electronic instruments—synths, drum pads–were they playing?

-Reminded of Steve Reich’s modern classical pieces which rely on repetition and slight variations over time.

-Oooh, that was a difficult inelegant transition (6 minutes in or so?

-This bit sounds like the opening song, The Kiss, from The Cure’s Kiss Me (x3) album

-Can’t wait to read the description of who and why this song was picked.

-Ok, it’s not “Fun”. That makes it a little better.

-I need scallions for that stir-fry.

    -Lots of meandering now.

-I was thinking this might provide a virtual experience of being on the autobahn. Not so much.

-Now, regretting not submitting the 5 hours Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries for this category.

  4. “Over ’round Each Other”by The Sneetches: Reminded a bit of Ben Folds Five for some reason. The piano not as in your face as BFF and perhaps set even better in the mix. This song has so much to love. Love the playful backup vocals throughout. All the the different fun salt and pepper musical accoutrements everywhere. And the whole tune itself as a song. Great Track.

“Autobahn” by Kraftwerk: For sure need headphones and some separated immersion time. I’m back. Precision crafting for sure in terms of using the full stereo field, playing with that field frequently, compression sweet, bass sounds to add the belly bottom and focus on mixing detail prob to a fault. This may be a case of raising the mix engineer onto a higher rung of the ladder than the songwriting and musical chops but who cares and what do I know. Like watching an IMax theatre production in sound. Yes, too long, but I braced myself and enjoyed the ride. Footnote: always chuckle when I hear that oh so midi drum sound in a good way…..assume this is vintage 80’s? …going for the 22 minute write-up tonight

interesting, I read after I write and see Bill picked out the Ben Folds vibe too….I thought it was subtle but prob not that subtle
