DP – pretty good cover, the guitar at points sounded a lot like sharp dressed man by ZZ top.
CL – Always enjoyed Cyndi Lauper even though some songs were way overplayed.. love the Goonies video for good enough and also have seen her perform (video, not live) with Henry Rollins for a charity even that was awesome.
“Route 66” / Depeche Mode. This sounds exactly like what would happen if Depeche Mode covered “Route 66.” The kicks on offer sound a bit menacing, in a codeined-out kind of way. Keeping the beat going during the bit everyone else does as a stop-time (“Well it goes through Missouri [bomp] down to St. Louie [bomp] …”) isn’t as effective, though. Plus, it’s a “timely” tip, not a “kindly” one, though I guess it’s their cover, they can do what they want. Note: I just looked it up and the first recorded version of this tune was a jazzy one, by Nat King Cole!
“I Drove All Night” / Cyndi Lauper. I don’t think it was until I heard this song for the first time, back whenever it was, that I realized how our Cyndi could belt. Shame on me. It was a few years after her early run of big hits, but it really threw me for a loop, especially that impassioned, full-bodied chorus. Great pick!
Depeche Mode – Route 66
Doesn’t excite me, but it’s solid. Much of their original stuff is much more interesting than what they bring to this cover. Stops just short of being fun – for me.
Cyndi Lauper – I Drove All Night
Very Motels-esque. She doesn’t only want to have fun – she sings strongly & earnestly here. She elevates the song.
“Route 66” by Depeche Mode: this certainly felt very familiar. In the DM canon for sure.
“I Drove All Night”by Cyndi Lauper: was this part of her broadway performance stuff. Very theatrical sounding and quite powerful…enjoyed…certainly deserves more listens than I gave it tonight.
