RS – Again, never heard of this group before. A little rough around the edges, garage band type sound. Overall pretty decent track
RUSH – One of those bands I never really got into. Enjoyed the hits. Worked with a heavy RUSH fan who gave me a bunch of albums, I was changed. Hemispheres might be my favorite album.. This song is a little to wild for an early morning listen, but amazing anyways
“Get On A Plane”. The Radio Stars? Wait, didn’t video kill these guys? Apparently not, at least on YouTube! Just your basic rawk, with some credible pop hooks worked in. A little generic — I’m missing the sense of a strong personality behind the work, or maybe just something more distinctive in the songwriting — but I like it. Hope they don’t make it to the sun, though. That’ll leave a mark.
“Cygnus X-1 etc” / Rush. Used to own this album – maybe I still do! — but I haven’t heard this one in years. this one came back to me when Neil’s drums kicked in during the intro. The maximalist rock of Rush. I like Rush, but whatever the science-fiction premise is on this one, its pretensions lose me. However, there’s no messing with the band battering away on all cylinders. The shifts in time signature are stimulating. That passage that starts around 8:00 (reprising a chord progression from the intro) is especially exciting.
Radio Stars- Didn’t video kill these guys. Flavors of some of the recent garage rock groups like the Strokes and the Struts but also with a Robin Zanderish/Cheap Trick swagger.
Totally proud of myself for pinning this one as a 1978 recording.
Rush- Wow. Haven’t listened this in earnest for a long time. The 10:22 time frame was a bit daunting even though I was familiar with this song. It is certainly a provocative collection of musicianship. Interesting time changes, cool drumming licks. I have become more enamored of Rush’s shorter, more terrestrial efforts (like The Camera Eye on Moving Pictures). I’m not sure I have narrative patience to follow the story and the array of musical themes over the entire song— or maybe the narrative is not articulated sufficiently. They really kick it back into high gear at around the 8 minute mark. Are we approaching the black hole then?
“Get On a Plane” by Radio Stars: sounds of a certain time; new waveyish late 70’s early 80’s. Garage band feel but with a certain pop twist. Fun local band rock sound….thinking I would really enjoy seeing live in a small venue with expectations set for a local band. Not sure I would hold the dial if I was scanning for music on the radio but glad that I was vectored here now. Enjoyed.
Radio Stars – Get On a Plane
Good, chugging rock. Alan is spot on with the nod to Cheap Trick. Like the break – some nice piano “notes” low in the mix. A good car song 🙂
Rush – Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage
Being a fan of both progrock & early Rush, the length of the track didn’t put me off. A Farewell to Kings is not an album I’m familiar with so I was interested to give this one a listen. It certainly has some of what appeals to me about Rush as a whole – NPs drumming mastery, time changes and tasty riffs. Geddy’s voice can be an acquired taste and it strains my limits here. There are parts of this I like very much, but it won’t move up to my list of favorite Rush tracks. Appreciate the choice though.
