  1. Motors – Sounded kind of familiar, then the chorus hit and I am pretty sure I have heard this before, just not sure where or how. Maybe XPN.

Chapman – I love the guitar in this song. Just a perfect simple song with a lot of feel. Interesting fact, I have yet to listen to the full album.

  2. The Motors – Airport
Very 70s. The intro has the feel of a theme from a romantic comedy. Then the vocals kick in and it’s a little more Ian Dury, English sounding. Then you have the ELO-ish repetition of the title and the killer variations of doo doo doo… Poply crafted. Ian Gomm comes to mind as well. Pop Pub Rock.

    Tracy Chapman – Fast Car
A fine song off a strong debut. It was ubiquitous when it hit the charts. Love the way she sorta rushes the vocals in the verses – almost staccato. The percussion is nicely chosen – at times seemingly like little more than a metronome, or a clock ticking with a punch when necessitated. A lot is packed in here. Genius?

  3. “Airport” / The Motors. Very baroque-pop, straight out the ELO playbook. (Though ELO itself can largely be extrapolated, I would argue, from the chorus alone of the Beatles’ “Birthday.”) Very amusing. “Dit dit dit dit dit.”

  4. Airport- Ooh, those opening keyboard tones are tough. 70’s soap opera porno? I can appreciate this as a time capsule and I really like the background vocals (the “oohs”/”doo doos” rather than the “AIRPORT” part). Is he directly imploring the airport to fly away his love? I think part of the issue is how tinny/trebelly the sound it. Gotta give it to the singer with the heartfelt ad lib of ‘airport’ at end.

FastCar- Man, this song was huge when it came. I thought it really captured a sense of helplessness, obstacles and dreams of a better future. When she breaks into the chorus–what an amazing emotional release. On listening now I’m impressed at how long she holds off on playing the chorus. Still a very powerful song. As a young songwriter I also admired her balls in her not rhyming many of her couplets.

  5. I am just not getting the connection to travel at all on this song. Submitter really was indirect on this one and it’s getting me so, it’s getting me so………Airport. I enjoyed when the instrumental kicked in during the final third. I have been to a few airports in my life and I have never seen one with a smiling face yet. I need to find this particular airport someday.

“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman: I do know this song well and it is a very well conceived track. Probably one that fits in the overplayed category for me. Her delivery and the musical composition as a whole carries a strong emotional impact for me pritty, pritty consistently.
