  1. CT – Could def tell this was Cheap Trick, Slightly long intro, would have never known it was Aint that a shame. Once it started, it wasn’t bad though.

P- This was a hard pill to swallow, just not into this style of music. I think it was too overdone. Seems the music overpowered the lyrics on occasion. Lady Gaga takes the win.

  2. Cheap Trick – Fun romp through the tune. I’m almost betting someone will include a track from this record in the five live submission.

Grapefruit – Semi quirky pop ditty. Not familiar with the original. Empty calories.

  3. Cheap Trick – Ain’t That a Shame
Bought this album on Japanese import ($30 at Record Museum in Neshaminy Mall). The band had a modest following before this record except in Japan. The story goes that they weren’t aware of how huge they were there and on their first trip there, assumed the crowd at the airport were there for someone else. This record was originally intended as a Japan-only release – a “thank you” to the fans. The version of “I Want You To Want Me” was the track heard ‘round the world – catapulting their career. Simply, they were a great live band with a bit of a sense of humor which I think it shows in Rick Nielsen’s guitar bits. He and the older-businessman look of rock-solid drummer Mister Bun E. Carlos served to balance the rock star looks of frontman Robin Zander & bassist Tom Petersson. They are giving it all for very appreciative fans on this track. They are a pretty fine cover band as well – their version of The Move’s “California Man” almost made my list. I only got to see them once, accompanied by Alan (I was accompanied, not Cheap Trick), on their Dream Police tour.

    Pomplamoose – Telephone
Wouldn’t matter what was being sung about here – just put it on repeat and I’ll ride the sugar high.

  4. “Ain’t That A Shame” / Cheap Trick. No surprise that the boys handle this rock n roll chestnut with aplomb — though guitar-heavy as it is, it bears scant resemblance to the Fat Man’s piano-driven original. The real curiosity is the two-minute pomp-rock intro — not sure it really adds anything, but it doesn’t take away, either, and what winds up a live crowd doesn’t always translate to straight audio. Fun six-string work by Nielsen, as always.

“Telephone” / Pomplamoose. Lighter than air pop confection, with wall-to-wall hooks. Nice change-up from the club-banger original.

  5. Pomplamoose- Telephone: Loved It but I am a sucker for the home brewed song crafting. I have sampled this duo’s work before and have always been inspired by the sounds they can get out of what appears to be a minimal “apartment studio size” (at least early on) set-up. They make it look simple and easy but I know they work the details. Deep bow of gratitude to them.

Ain’t That a Shame (Live at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, JPN – April 1978): I have heard about the Budokan show’s reputation as a great live performance so my expectations were prob higher than they should have been. It does appear to showcase Cheap Trick in top form. The song highlights the virtuosity of the guitar player(s) perhaps to a fault. However, I also picked up how effective the drums were in this version. I did like the intro and how the drums just create energy, build momentum and hint at the sparkle in the song to follow. Song itself was just fine and, outro was too long but, on the whole, the entire piece was very well done.

  6. cheap trick – Are we sure this is a cover? I listened to both versions and I wasn’t even sure if the lyrics were the same. Great job on recycling something old into something completely different. Listening to it and thinking this has to be the same crowd and recording as want you to want me. Sure enough it segways straight into that song. PS I know this was ed.

Telephone – Never heard the gaga version. Kind of strikes me as pop music converted to kids music. It’s only 2 minutes =p
