“War Pigs” by Faith No More
Original Artist: Black Sabbath
Submitted by Justin
It’s a pretty faithful to the original cover of a great song. Adds nothing to the original work, but this was one of my favorite albums. Great song to cover. Always the highlight of a sabbath show for me.

“Love is All Around” by Husker Du
Original Artist: Sonny Curtis

The Huskers were one of my favorite bands back in the day, and I still like ’em a lot. When their great album “Flip Your Wig” came out, I remember hearing that they had done the theme to the old “Mary Tyler Moore” show as a B-side, but i somehow never heard it until a couple years ago. I was thoroughly charmed by them giving this sweet little tune (written and sung by Sonny Curtis, an early member of Buddy Holly’s Crickets!) the full Husker, but still in all earnestness. I always wondered if I had misread it, and they were actually spoofing the number; but Bob Mould has confirmed that it truly was a tribute to the band’s own hometown of Minneapolis by way of the iconic TV show set there. (by the way, the song’s also been covered by Sammy Davis Jr., Ray Conniff, and Joan Jett!). And really, in retrospect, the Huskers were never standard-issue punks; there was always plenty of romanticism to match the poppy melodicism that typically overlaid their fearsome power-trio attack.

“Iron Man” by The Cardigans
Original Artist: Black Sabbath
Submitted by Ed
I think the pop wonderfulness of Lovefool inspired me to pick up the First Band on the Moon album. I was instantly a fan – they have a unique sound that fits the sound of the vocals perfectly. When I heard Iron Man, I both chuckled and revelled.
They breezily lounge through the dystopian tale – the boop, boopy oop part just slays me.

“Where is My Mind?” by Nada Surf
Original Artist: Pixies
Submitted by Sir David
I love the album Surfa Rosa by the Pixies and found this version by Nada Surf that hit the sweet spot for me….although the original still is much more raw ….go listen to that one too 😉

“Banana Splits Theme” by The Dickies
Original Artist: The Banana Splits
Submitted by Alan
A nod to Ed for introducing me to The Dickies back in Green House! They have a few worthy covers including a killer version of The Moody Blues Knights in White Satin. But this one is a frantic, manic rush of the kids TV show theme. Once you hear it, the original sounds like it is a 45 played on 33 (or for the older people in our group, a 78 played on 45).

“Satisfaction” by Devo
Original Artist: The Rolling Stones
Submitted by Paul
Is there any better example of a band deconstructing a classic and owning it? Alan Meyers out metronomes Charlie Watts. Forget moves like Jagger, I need moves like Mothersbaugh.
