“Iron Man”/Cardigans. A jazzy twitting of the Sabbath classic. The original is actually among my least favorite of Black Sab’s best-known tracks; I have no idea what it’s about, for instance, though I do like the primordial heaviness of the music and the teenage earnestness with which Ozzy invested the fantasy lyrics. Both are duly undermined here, but it’s good for a chuckle.
“Where is My Mind”/ Nada Surf. I missed the whole Pixies thing and this song didn’t sound familiar. it’s a good one, though, good wordplay and interesting melody. I know even less about Nada Surf, but I like this version: interesting beat and nice atmospherics.
The Cardigans – Iron Man
Black Sabbath’s version is one of the earliest singles I can remember spinning as the needle worked its way through the spiral – this version certainly has a bit of fun with it, but I don’t think it’s meant to “dis.” The Cardigans had their hit single with Lovefool from the record and it is a darn fine long-player. I love the way this version ambles along with the walking bass – a bit Cake-like in its nonchalance-ness. Thumbs up – I could listen to this all day. Note: The Cardigans did Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on their previous record, Life.
Nada Surf – Where Is My Mind?
Pixies are a band I know I’m supposed to like more than I think I do – their songs tend to drag on a bit for my taste maybe? That said, a second listen drew me in here. My experience with Nada Surf is spotty – I like a handful of the tracks I’ve heard, but can’t name one. They do just enough with this one to make it stand apart from the original. Well done.
Cardigans – well that’s certainly a different take on a classic. 100% does not fit the lyrics, but this was fun. Makes me wonder what their reasoning behind this was.
Nada – This felt like the prototype for the millennial era of music. I like the pixies version a bit more. Just the right tone on the vocals vs this. Lovely comment on the youtube pixies copy “Sounds like the type of music that would play in the background while you’re committing suicide…”
The Cardigans-Ironman: I am familiar with this cover version (not sure how or why); cool tempo and rhythms; the simple picking tones. The warbling pads; her most excellent voice. Just Lub it.
Cardigans – This is what I look for in a cover. A band reinventing a song that we all know and making it their own. Yeah, purists are spitting nickles over this one, but kudos Nina and the boys for turning this into a loungey trip.
NS – Somewhat sedate take on the original (not that the original was a barn burner) at the slow and steady pace throughout with no build. It’s OK.
C- I’m blown away, I like the Cardigans, I have this album, don’t ever recall making the connection. pretty crazy cover. her voice is awesome.
NS, never heard of them. heard of the pixies but never listened to them. pretty good, kind of reminds a bit of La Sera, that style anyway.
