  1. JC- It’s Johnny Cash, I don’t think this song could have been done better by anybody else. When I heard it way back in the day, I thought it was a horrible rendition, but when you look back at it, its genius.

SP – Always thought this was a SP original until I heard the Animals version. I think I like the SP way more. but I could be tilted because it is the first version of the song I ever heard. who knows.

  2. Johnny Cash – Hurt
Sounds like he’s pouring the whole of his life experience into this one.

    A giant among cover versions.

I really like the lyric “full of broken thoughts… I cannot repair”

Smashing Pumpkins – A Girl Named Sandoz
Song really swings and SP, appropriately, go all Hendrix/Cream on it. A good song choice for them. Me likey.

  3. Cash – This was my second introduction to cash. I instantly liked it. I was a big fan of the Nine Inch Nails version. This made me take another look at johnny cash. I think this is when i found out that cash wasn’t just some wholesome country guy my grandparents used to listen to.

SP – Nice, I heard the hendrix cream aspect to it too. Made me think of cross town traffic at one point. I’ll have to give the animals version a go so I can compare them. I was never the biggest SP fan, too whiney and depressed acting for me, but this is a good one.

  4. A Girl Name Sandoz: Smashing Pumpkins: Musical Proof: This songs pays homage to Jimi Hendrix. I like the Jimi Hendrix sound. I like this song.

This one was a fun journey this week. That is all I got this week.

  5. “Hurt” / J. Cash. Famous cover, and rightfully so. Part of Cash’s fruitful collabos with Rick Rubin, this is a textbook on taking a well-known number and redoing it in a totally different style that is true to the original while making it even more powerful. You can really hear the years on Cash and like the very sparseness of the production it helps make the track.

“Girl Named Sandoz” / S. Pumpkins. I don’t know the original, and am not a big Pumpkinhead, but I like this. appropriately psychedelic and face-melty. The Hendrix (especially “crosstown traffic”) influence is evident. fun trivia: Hendrix was managed by Chas Chandler, who was the Animals’ bassist.

  6. Going back through these, was sure I submitted for this, but…

Man in Black – I really dig the read on this one. The only version I find better is this:

SP – Not a fan of the band even a little bit, but this was fun.
