JH – I really got deep into Jimi awhile back, it was all that I would listen to. From his collection to his covers of blues. Totally forgot about him over the years. Always a good listen. Is this the first entry? I don’t recall hearing him previously.
Ice – Definitely got that prog rock sound from the instrumentation to the lyrics, Has to be from one of Ed’s pals if not Ed himself. Ha!
Jimi Hendrix – Up From The Skies
My favorite Hendrix album. This track just kinda ambles along – a little juke with WahWah (flange?) on the ghee-tar. An extraterrestrial returning(?) to…
“The smell of a world that is burned… …maybe it’s just a change of climate”
I can dig it.
Icehouse – The Girl in the Moon
I’ve been a fan of Icehouse’s since their first, triple threat – the song Icehouse on the album Icehouse, but would never have considered their music to be progrock (as Ian suggested). I can kinda see it here as it has the sound of some of the better of the progmasters’ attempts to “popify” their sound – Yes’ 90125 or Genesis’ Duke. I somehow missed this track. The bass is very important and I like that. It also brings to mind Thomas Dolby and The Cars’ Heartbeat City album. Me likey.
“Girl in the Moon”/Ice House. Not the man, but the girl in the moon. Nice conceit. The lyrics are appealingly more scene-setting than direct, lots of lines to read between. Very echoey, reverby production, very 80s. Sufficiently engaging!
Jimi- I’ll say first that I love Jimi and the Experience for all the reasons most other people do, maybe adding that their rhythm playing (see “Fire”) is spectacular. I really didn’t like this song. I tried, but didnt get there. I kept thinking, “If I didn’t was Jimi Hendrix, would I enjoy and appreciate it?” I kept answering, “No.”
Icehouse- Love that little descending riff at the beginning. While I like the overall sound of this song and some of the frills–interesting chords and melodic flairs- it does border on 1980’s genericness. Actually, now as the song goes on, I am appreciating some of the dystonic and dramatic flourishes in there. I can see this on a John Hughes sounbdtrack.
“Up From The Skies” by Jimi Hendrix: kind of a soft groovy vibe…interesting..this does not sound very Hendrix yet at the same time it does. Interesting vocal panning effect. Waiting for the guitar riffing to kick in……..he’s is kind of hanging back the guitar fireworks …until the very last bits but overall fairly subdued
