Wings: Not a big fan of Wings, I despise the song Jet, most likely due to it being overplayed. The only enjoyment I get from Wings is a segment from the movie Role Models, Where one fella , sings the song “Love take me down to the street” and there is a discussion as to whether Wings wrote it. It was a song written for the movie so it was NOT an actual Wings song.
Eve’s Plumb – Came across them watching a Beavis & Butthead episode. I pretty sure I was the only person who ever heard of them. They did a cameo of themselves in the movie Higher Learning. The lead singer eventually turned to Pop music and renamed herself Vitamin C, with the beloved hit song Graduation (friends Forever) in the 90’s . I thought about immediately burning her Eve’s Plumb CDs after this, but glad I did not. There has been speculation that the name is derived from Eve PLumb, who played Jan Brady in the Brady bunch.
Ian! Ian! Follow-Up! Follow-Up! Given your general disinclination toward Wings, are you including the current MyFive offering in that blanket of disgust? And if I may, did you enjoy the Wings TV show that aired on NBC in the early 90’s? Do you like buffalo chicken wings? Do you ever just ‘wing-it’? Thank you.
Eve’s Plumb- Ya gotta give it to these folks for coming up with a cheeky, spicy name that speak to a certain cohort of people of a certain age. As far as the song goes, that took me to places like Smashing Pumpkins meets Cocteau Twins. I like the droning (not a criticism) guitar and pounding regularity of the rhythm. Like the Twins, I felt less inclined to listen to the lyrics, hearing the voice as more of an instrument with tonal lilts and drops. This selection has inspired me to pull out my vinyl copy of Robert’s Reed.
“V&M etc”/Wings. What I found most interesting in this tune was how much ’50s-style boogie rock ‘n’ roll was in the “V&M” and/or “Rock Show” portion (I am unfamiliar with both of those tunes). Not surprising from Sir Paul, I suppose, but more of it than I’m used to hearing from Wings. I believe this would also fit well in the NEXT round, songs about makin’ moosic. A full-bodied medley.
“Venus Meets Pluto”/ Eve’s Plumb. Sets a nice mood, but I don’t know what it makes me feel like doing. Venus is love and Pluto is the god of the underworld, ie, Death, so hmm-ha. I think it would sound great in a bar, and it sounded just fine on headphones. Interesting when tracks can keep your attention without really having tons in the way of shifting dynamics. Other M5ers have already commented on the apparent “Brady Bunch” reference, so there went that riff.
Paul McCartney & Wings – Venus & Mars/Jet/Rock Show
Begins in a very 70s McCartney way – I smile as the bouncy bass kicks in – all “a relic from a different age.” Medleyfys nicely with the lively piano. “I thought that the only lonely place was on the moon” – take it right into Live and Let Die.
Eve’s Plumb – Venus Meets Pluto
Gets a solid drone going – not unlike the space rock of Hawkwind.I was able to sink down into it nicely. Everything swirls together and around me. I am one with the universe.
“Venus & Mars/Jet/Rock Show” by Paul McCartney & Wings: I like that song Jet . Not familiar with Venus and Mars. The combo together delivered a strong energized rockin’ live performance.
“Venus Meets Pluto”by Eve’s Plumb: Love the sound, the textures and vibe that nicely surround that ethereal voice. Hypnotic and a bit magical. Excellent.
