  1. NA – The song is really about Neptune City NJ, I guess NJ can be somewhat Alien Like. Any chance I can get to throw Nicole Atkins into the mix I am taking.

Su – I don’t think my ears are doing to good this morning because this sounded very muddled to me and hard to make out the lyrics. it sounded sort of like grunge but not as grungy. Something similar to Weezer. Especially the guitar riffs. Wish I could hear it a little better.

  2. Nicole Atkins – Neptune City
Right off I’m thinking Mazzy Star and/or Cowboy Junkies. Kinda trods but in doing so sets a certain mood. She has a strong voice reminiscent of some of the old female crooners. Not an everyday kinda track, but will go down smoothly when I’m digging that particular groove.

Sugar – Man on the Moon
Half expected an R.E.M. cover. Whether as part of Husker Du, Sugar or doing it all solo, I find little fault with Bob Mould’s output. I’m actually hearing similarities to Super Furry Animals on this one. Super sonic production. “Don’t you know that space is the place?”

  3. “Neptune City”/Nicole Atkins. A lovely lament for what I’m imagining was either her hometown or a seaside amusement park (a la Springsteen’s “My City of Ruins”). As such, I’d argue it’s rather earthbound and reflects this round’s theme only by linguistic coincidence. Anyway, it does have a pleasingly old-school feel; keys aside, it could be a song from the 50s by Peggy Lee or someone. I caught Atkins live a few years back — good show.

“Man in the Moon”/Sugar. Mr. Mould! He does like his guitars loud and his hooks poppy. The intro is Sabbathy and the tempo a bit more mid- than I’m used to from his rockers from Husker Du onward. The first instrumental break, brief, surprises with its synthy texture (when people imagine outer-space music-making, they never think hand-drums or nose-flutes). The interlude that kicks in around 2:30 is pretty majestic. I associate the motto “space is the place” with Sun Ra, but this doesn’t seem to be any kind of tribute.

  4. “Neptune City” by Nicole Atkins: reminds me a bit of Lana Del Rey. Could be they go for a similar genre. This sort of slow slightly sad…looking back with regret or nostalgia feel. Retro vibe. This song pulls it off very well. I entered into the mood and drifted with tide as planned. Enjoyed.

    1. Neptune- This a hard one to place. It could fall into any number of decades. There is also an ethereal David Lynch/Twin Peaks quality to it. Atmospheric and cinematic. Stirring and beautiful.

Sugar- Forgot about this one. I love this era of Bob Mould and this album also has the classic If I Can’t Change Your Mind. While he is usually better with faster tempos IMHO, this midtempo number has a cool headbob pace to it. Great layering of guitars.
