Perfect Circle- Don’t know these guys. My only association to them is that REM has a song of the sane name which I don’t like. I didn’t find too much to latch onto here. Definitely a 90ish vibe- mid-tempo, Vedderish melodic links. I think I felt stuck in the middle dynamic and rhythmic range and wanted a little shake up.
Marshall Crenshaw – Fantastic Planet of Love
Kinda wish I had been at this show. Crazy crashing cacophonous smash to begin (maybe it is the end of the previous song?) and then into a staccato riff that reminds me a little of Joe Jackson’s “One More Time” (that could be because it recently came on in my mix). First of all, this track swings. This unit is tight. I am going to have to give this full album a spin. Stellar selection!
Have I said that Marshall Crenshaw is an underappreciated guitarist?
[Note A: Sounds great on my new JBL bluetooth headphones]
[Note 2: Also makes me want to give JJ’s Big World album a spin]
A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras
I think this one dots all of the I’s and crosses all of the T’s for the genre in which it sits. Admittedly not my “jam”, but I think it just blends in and needs something to help it stand out.
“Fantastic Planet of Love”/M. Crenshaw. Great song I haven’t heard in ages, and a nice live rendition. I want to call the rhythm “bossa nova,” not sure if that’s accurate, but by any name this has a very appealing jazzy feel and the ensemble playing is ideal, with effortless dynamic shifts. The tremolo guitar is on point.
“Three Libras”/A Perfect Circle. The basic track is OK, but this one partakes of that particular brand of mopey ’90s angst that doesn’t do it for me. (I suppose I prefer angst, and mopiness, expressed other ways.)
Fantastic Track. Love the guitar work, the thumping drum and bass and the song’s upbeat tempo and feel. This makes may feel like it is indeed such a Fantastic Planet of Love. Ok, maybe not but it does lean me more in that direction. Oh and just noticed this is a live version. Sounds to be a really good mix to my ears.
“3 Libras” by A Perfect Circle:
Very 90’s vibe, a cross between Puddle of Mudd and Staind with a spritz of Godsmack thrown in. I can tire of this genre, it was so pervasive for awhile but you can’t deny it’s big emotional swelling lunar pull. It was good to hear this.
MC – Pretty bad jam. has a little “surfy/ spanish Santana guitar feel” in the beginning. Don’t believe I have heard of this guy before.
PC – I have their first 2 albums and never get tired of them. A very talented group of musicians
