“No Language in Our Lungs” by XTC
Submitted by Ed

Black Sea was the first XTC album that I anticipated the release of – buying it in its green, paper-bag sleeve upon initial release. While it doesn’t have the radio-ready appeal of Generals and Majors or Respectable Street, this track is an emotional powerhouse. Slamming and crashing angst. I couldn’t resist it for this round.

“Wrote A Song For Everyone” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Submitted by Bill

Sorry/not sorry to go to the CCR well again so soon, but this song was made for this round. (John Fogerty told me so.) Against the backdrop of Vietnam, Fogerty finds resonance all the way back to ancient Egypt (!) for the limitations of communicating through song, and of the power of songs to effect change. And yet try we must. A simply eloquent guitar solo, and one of Fogerty’s most convincingly mournful vocals. “If you see the answer, now’s the time to say.”

Ah, the algorithm!
“Soul gets squeezed out
Edges get blunt
Demographic
Gives what you want”

“The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin
Submitted by Dave

“The Entertainer” is a classic piano rag composed by Scott Joplin in 1902. It’s one of Joplin’s most famous and enduring compositions, and it’s often considered one of the defining pieces of the ragtime genre. I also once could play it reasonably well. I would like to be able to play it again someday.
