BM – Not really a fan but you can’t deny it works.
SG – never a fan of them when they came out, not sure why. I grew to like them as I got older, then found Chris Cornell’s solo stuff and fell in love. Amazing talent
“I Write the Songs”/B. Manilow. Oh, he does, does he? Mr. M, that former jingle composer and Midler accompanist, has long been a punching bag for enemies of the devoutly middlebrow, or for anyone who likes their pop on the Stooges side of, say, Air Supply. Of course he is a talent melodist, and has a doofy earnest charm. Still, I suspect this pick is a witting provocation. And as someone once said, “It’s hard to take a fella seriously when he claims to have *invented music.*”
“Spoonman”/Soundgarden. I never delved deeply into Soundgarden but I always like what I hear. Of course Cornell’s powerhouse vocals are a given, but on this listen I was most impressed by the rhythm section, at once nimble and thunderous, in a rather Zeppelinish way.
Barry Manilow – I Write the Songs
Ah, soft rock. Pair with Feelings. This leans to the sappy, though it is certainly catchy. Maybe a future MyFive round: Songs of Special Things 🙂
Soundgarden – Spoonman
A band I’ve managed to avoid for the most part. I think the vocals just don’t do it for me. The music is fine, if a bit generic. The break with the bass and an interesting enough guitar solo going into the “spoonage” saves it.
“I Write the Songs” by Barry Manilow: this is just a bit too much for me, too saccharin sweet and commercial but he did indeed write a song, I would not say it was “the” song that makes the whole world sing though.
“Spoonman” by Soundgarden: I feel like this was offered up before? Rock with a powerful guitar sound all the way through and I DO enjoy his voice. Not a rabid fan of Soundgarden but DO appreciate their talent. It hit the spot for me today. It DO. yes..a “DO” hat-trick…bonus for you all.
