XTC – Wasn’t familiar until My 5. Found out by Ed that I actually heard their songs before but they were covers done by Les Claypool (Scissor Man, Making plans for Nigel) on Primus’ album Miscellaneous Debris.
CCR – Never came across this song before. I’m sure there are a bunch I have never heard since I mainly owned there “Best of” albums. A great band that I sometimes forget about. Have to get them back into the rotation.
XTC- Wait, what? XTC?! So, I’ve never, ever heard of them. What a great find? Who, pray tell, is the contributor to offer this whimsical foursome of lads from Swindon upon us? Ok, enough of that. Like many XTC songs, this one is weird and wonderful. As I was listening to the meandering yet abrupt guitar and vocal lines which are beautifully in concert and harmonized, I was reminded of a comment by Sting in a recent interview by Rick Beato. They were talking about the crucial value of surprise in music, citing that many ‘popular’ songs nowadays are repetitive and boring. This song epitomizes that value. I challenge anyone to guess where the next notes are coming from or going here. I was even thinking how difficult it must have been for Andy’s bandmates to learn this one.
XTC – No Language in Our Lungs
Firstly, this is the second XTC track this round and I did not submit both of ’em 🙂
Love the steady trodding of the beat and the crunching guitar and the soaring bridge. And, of course Colin’s wonderful bass playing.
“No chance to speak before we’re bones.”
Eddendum: Just saw that Freaks and Geeks used this song in one of their episodes. Never saw the show – may need to give it a look.
CCR – Wrote a Song for Everyone
The original. This has always been one of my favorite Creedence tracks. Kinda stretches out. Nice touches in the drumming that I don’t think I previously noticed. Relatable pain.
“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.” The Captain (Cool Hand Luke)
Freaks and Geeks is a great show. I’ve watched the series at least a few times. its about a bunch of kids in school during probably the mid 70s. I think it is on Hulu and Paramount + currently. I could also send you a link to download them if you wanted.
“No Language in Our Lungs”/XTC. The implicit irony of communicating about the difficulty of communicating (also the case, in a slightly different way, with this week’s other selection). Compared to most other XTC from this period I can recall, this one is at once a bit more steady-rocking and guitar-chimey. “The words got in the way.” Musically interesting, as XTC tends to be.
“Wrote A Song For Everyone” by Creedence Clearwater Revival: Fun to compare this one with the Staples/Tweedy version delivered several weeks ago. I like them both a bunch
“No Language in Our Lungs” by XTC: Excellent Track…Love It. I was to lazy to research the lyrics but I am curious. Will seek them out

CCR- Not a huge CCR fan and have a low threshold for Fogerty’s twang, though this one has its moments. I found myself wishing for a less grating version of the vocal. Huzzah! There is a great version of this tune by Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy- just the two of them and an acoustic guitar.
