  1. Scorpions – No one like you was probably the first Scorpion song I remember liking. I think the video brought me in. (I can’t remember) then of course Rock you like a Hurricane, and then the unforgettable whistle of Winds of Change. I believe my dad bought the cassingle of that song. A band I forgot, but I might have to actually listen to a full album.

Nash – Wasn’t sure what was going to come of this but I actually like it. I’ll have to check out some more.

  2. Scorpions – Top of the Bill
Scorpions seem now to be the act of which the song speaks. I was initially going to say this one was all about the guitar and drums, but it all works together pretty tightly. With early guitarist Uli John Roth bending strings (those little “answers” to a vocal line slay me) and the unmistakable, and sometimes unintelligible, Klaus Meine on vocals and nice backing vox, this one is a gem of mid-70s hard rock that the American music scene never knew about (he said as he stepped down from his soapbox).

Nash the Slash – American Band-ages
Fun beginning and a rocking, proudly without guitars, version of the Grand Funk Railroad standard. The vocals are a little challenging, but he makes it happen with the blips wall of synths (and maybe some treated other instruments – hard to pick out). A fine, one-man Canadian R-teest!

    Notes:
    1. NtS formed the Canadian prog-rock band FM and appeared on the track from them included in the previous round.
    2. I remember that GFR’s “Some Kind of Wonderful” was a huge party song when I DJ’d back in the 90s

  3. “Top of the Bill”/Scorpions. Scorps interest me in part as one of the few hard-rock acts from a non-English-speaking country to gain any mainstream success, especially in the 70s and 80s. This one’s built around a pretty standard riff, dressed up with Klaus’ distinctive vox (I’m surprised he ever recovered from that scream just after 2:00) and some appropriately over-the-top theatrics, in particular the sounds of a guitar under felonious assault that serve as the outro. Also, songs about bands on the rise are their own subgenre: Boston’s “Rock and Roll Band”, the Who’s “Success Story”…

“American Band-ages”/ Nash the Slash. Very amusing novelty cover of an FM staple. “I’m an American band!” Ha! I have to admit this is the most of the lyrics I’ve ever understood in this song. Bonus points for incorporating the “Bandstand” theme as the intro. Rock and roll touring-themed songs could be their own category. Side question: Do hotels still have detectives?

  4. “Top of the Bill” by Scorpions: yup….classic Scorpions sound. That riffing at the end was crazy. Curious, were they top of the bill in their time or the second act leading up to the top of the bill? I assume they must have been fairly mega huge back in the day. Perhaps the Carpenters came on right after them? “I’m on the Top of the World Looking Down on Creation and the……”….. for some reason that song is playing in my head…is this on the weekend setlist Get-Up?…some cows are asking.

American Band-ages” by Nash the Slash: Interesting change-up to a full rock-out version of the cover. I actually was kind of digging the front end version. The second portion felt a bit schticky, stage act and midi-ized synth but that is prob exactly the context and one man band point this was delivered in. Enjoyed.
