  1. RS – Wife introduced me to Regina awhile back. I love the raw unfiltered, vibe of the music. A lot of people think it is horrible. Unfortunately for me, her last 3? albums have become too poppy and overproduced, every little sound has be so refined that it annoys me. I liked the feeling of, I’ll just sit down with my piano and see what happens.

FC – I really like this. Not familiar with group. reminds me of carol king and Joni Mitchell.. just nice chill music to sit back and relax to.

  2. “Reading Time With Pickle”/Regina Spektor. She has been on the edge of my musical awareness for some while. This song reminds me A LOT of Joanna Newsom, in terms of the quirky playfulness, poetic rumination and sparse instrumentation, but also in the quality of Spektor’s voice; if you’d told me this was JN I’d have believed you (down to her vocal range and some of her inflections — though her soulful slurring also recalls Rickie Lee Jones). So curious and cryptically personal, but somehow it sustains its 5.5 minutes (even though I thought “Pickle” was going to be a cat or something she likes to sit down and read to.) “Love is the answer to a question I have forgotten.”

  3. Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle
Amanda Palmer & Tori Amos come to mind. I’ve heard smatterings of her work and I have generally liked it. It’s almost as if she’s just relating this story on-the-spot. Love the variety of phrasing styles – some sounding deadpan/matter-of-fact. “Emanating soft, soft green…” Ragged fun – a quality selection.
Aside: I recently heard in a song, or a podcast, a little story about seeing a funny face in a jar of olives, buying it and a couple having laughs about it as a fun little inside joke type of thing.

Fairport Convention – Who Knows Where the Time Goes
I know this one fairly well, but probably haven’t given it the close listen it deserves. Sandy Denny sings it beautifully – she also wrote it I now see. It has such an easy lilt to it. “Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming – I have no thought of time” One of my favorite things when on vacation is to lose track of time. Richard Thompson provides wonderfully understated color on guitar. Another great selection.
Aside: I had forgotten she spent some time in Strawbs

  4. “Reading Time with Pickle” by Regina Spektor

Very simple piano lines accompanying a very odd, unique voice that adds textures and complexities which carry the day. The answer of course has to be love. I agree.

“Who Knows Where the Time Goes” by Fairport Convention. Really tucked that wurly down in the right corner of the stereo field. This is a pleasant song. I am reminded of Joan Baez or Nick Drake. Strong lyrics and laid back style that captivates. I would point her to a song called The Moment That Doesn’t Exist if she really wants an answer to her question.
