“Minutes to Memories” by John Mellencamp

Yes, it edges into sentimentalism in spots, with a pinch of didacticism, and it’s a poster song for Americana rock. But dag, it sounds great, and emotionally it hits home for me every time, with punchy details in the lyrics (“He fell asleep with his head against the window”) and nice production touches.

Love this track…. the horn, the sound of those keys, the tasty guitar work and the whole vibe…it just keeps lifting right to the finale

These guys are a bit of a one-song-wonder for me. I’ve listened to a bit of their other stuff, but nothing comes close to this slice of pop deliciousness – an obvious choice for this round.

I will likely be told that I submitted this song on at least one other MyFive round but, care thee not! This is probably one of my favorite songs ever. Maybe because Life’s Rich Pageant is a seminal record in my musical life. Maybe it’s because I love the Rickenbacker guitar sound, the tempo and the harmonies. But it is probably just this one line: “Time is an abstract/Explains the change, the difference between/ what you want and what you need.”
