John Cougar Melloncamp – Minutes to Memories
Remember that this was the album where one first had to give some true respect to JM. Wasn’t yet able to completely shed the “Cougar,” but, as I remember, it was a pretty strong collection of songs. This one makes me think of The Alarm and The Rave-Ups – which probably makes this an influence. Okay, this song has been playing in the background as I write – I need to give it full attention on a second listen.
Heartland rock. There’s some grit & muscle here, but yet also tenderness. Well done. May have to go back and give the album a listen.
Julian Cope – 5 O’Clock World
Know this cover well. Love it. Julian’s unmistakable voice over buzzsaw and horns with the rhythm section propelling it forward. Pair with Devo’s cover of Working in a Coal Mine and/or maybe Pretenders’ Back on the Chain Gang. Ooh and I dig that organ jam.
Also makes me remember the Drew Carey Show – which used the original in its opening.
JCM- Love the opening here- the crack of the snare, tone of the bass, and tambo. On further inspection the mandolin is wonderful. Here are my crazy associations to this song. There is something about the rhythm of the chorus that reminds me of Two Tickets to Paradise. Also, there is something in his exposition that is reminiscent of the song stylings of one Edward Alfred Bejzak. Somethong about the way he describes the scene, the narrative. Good song.
JC- I can’t not hear Elvis Costello here in this one. Never heard the original but this is sweet. I often associate him with more dark themes and melodies but I love the brightness of this.
JM – another artist that I have forgotten about. Have the record with Little Pink Houses on it. Always enjoyed Mellencamp.
JC – Not Jesus. At first listen, I was like “this sounds familiar” then my wife comes into the room singing along. Obviously it must be a cover. Never hear of this artist. I would have to listen to the original but I feel Julian did a good job on this rendition regardless.
“5 O’Clock World”/J. Cope. Kinda “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” through a Motown filter, with some punchy horns and extra points for that industrial noise I’d identify as an air gun. Don’t know Cope’s work well but he handles this authoritatively, reminds me a little of Iggy Pop. Also, I didn’t recognize this as a cover till I read it here!
“Minutes to Memories” by John Mellencamp”: I believe this is one of several excellent songs that make up the album. That twangy guitar, it’snrythym and the way the guitars layer are so nice and compliment his rural america persona. Enjoyed

A great start to the new round!

I am humbled to be mentioned in this context and appreciate the kindness.
