A Tribe Called Quest – After Hours
ATCQ layin’ it down. Probably the crew from this genre I know the best and get served the most. A little Stevie Wonder vibe and they simply relate. Not many acts could make frogs croakin’ with the beat work. They just have “it.” “It was cool.”
ATCQ- What happened to the musical scratch? I just don’t hear it used with much skill or creativity like this anymore. Since my ear is not sufficiently sophistocated to process fast and furious raps, I appreciate this style of laid back and precisely articulated rap. And frogs. I like the sounds that frogs make. So this song was a win-win for me. Killer groove. And fake ending! Win-win-win!
Tribe. I’m not a big rap guy, but Tribe just does it for me. It’s smooth and jazzy served up with a bit of funk. Now there are some songs that are a little rough, but when the jazz kicks in, it’s always a good listen. I only own one album, The Low End Theory. It was always on the rotation in the car.
“After Hours”/ATCQ. Masters of the smart and engaging audio landscape. Here, a real shaggy-dog story about a single night spent wandering, conversing and chilling. Really sets the scene and captures the feel.
I hear a Tone Loc vibe. This hip hop flow just moves you into a beautiful rhythm pocket. A little too heavy on the squelch sound for my taste (heartburn) but other than that a very smooth ride.

Oh, I forgot to add intelligent. The word choices for the rhymes are fantastic.
