“Mississippi Goddam” by Nina Simone
Submitted by Bill

No “We Shall Overcome” for Ms. Simone in 1964 (when the song was released, though this live version is from 1965). A blunt enraged accounting of racial abuses in the American South, belied by the bouncy rhythm that only adds ironic bite.

“Your Racist Friend” by They Might Be Giants
Submitted by Alan

Protests begin at home, at least with small but meaningful attempts to combat injustice, mistreatment and prejudice. At least that’s how the Johns from They Might Be Giants put it. Check out the great arrangement here- accordian, backward tracks and blistering middle solo.

“Toxicity” by System of a Down
Submitted by Ian

SoaD I have loved from the beginning, hard core but with a purpose, often humorous.

“Marie Antoinette” by Curved Air
Submitted by Ed

I have been trying to listen to things on my actual stereo a little more. I plopped an MP3 CD in a DVD player (I no longer have a dedicated CD player) as I wanted to listen to Shylock’s Gialorgues album, but since it wasn’t hooked to a TV, I had no DVD menu. There were two Curved Air albums that came up first when I hit play. The second was 1972’s Phantasmagoria – arguably their best – with this track standing out as a natural fit, and a late edition to my picks, for this round.

“Call It Democracy” by Bruce Cockburn
Submitted by Dave

This was is a bit on the nose. Stumbled across it and enjoyed the tune and the sentiment. Despite it’s age, felt like it was written yesterday. Need to check into this singer more me thinks.
