  1. Wow, another round with similar styles.

BH – this is an amazing song, and any song about staying high on the list in my book. I have to check out more of their work.

PJ – this is hard for me because of my great dislike of this song. I am trying to take that aspect out and listen but its still there. The reedition is ok. I like the style, its just not working for me.

  2. Brittany Howard – Stay High
This grabbed me pretty quickly. That little tinkling and then that unshakeable groove. Vocals are reminiscent of Prince. Watched a bit of the video a second time through – I love the visible disdain when singing “…with that ugly look on their face” and that the guys are thumb-wrestling in the background. Fits in great with classic seventies’ soul. This is a special one – Chef’s kiss.

Postmodern Jukebox – I Want You To Want Me
Sounds like a version The Band might have done. A fine take – works well in this template. Nice vocal and piano flourishes.

  3. “IWY2WE”/PMJ. Interesting project this Post Modern Juke — tours this show recasting rock hits as old-school jazz/blues/R&B, with vintage nightclub costuming. Raises the question of how much a track’s impact has to do with the song in the abstract and how much with arrangement, production and style. This particular recasting doesn’t change the song’s meaning, really. But slower and quieter takes always make you focus on the lyrics more, and in this case emphasizes the yearning over the original’s demand for immediate gratification.

  4. BH- How can you not like a song with a toy piano sound? BriHo kills it. I appreciated the nuance and delicateness that the band offers, particularly the steadfastness of the drummer.

PJ- I’ve seen Postmodern Jukebox live for a show where they primarily recast 80s hits as 20s songs. It was compelling and fabulous and made me rethink songs I thought I knew. This one, not so much. A few of the bluesy piano turns were very tasty but overall I miss the hooks, the beats and the background of Japanese teens in the background of the Budakhan recording.

  5. “Stay High” by Brittany Howard; This was an excellent, smooth ride. She has a great voice with excellent delivery. This one is all about the vocals

“I Want You To Want Me” by Postmodern Jukebox: I have seen a couple of these Postmodern Jukebox covers and they are almost always very well done. I think a sad clown plays in many of them if I recall correctly. This one is another cool interpretation of a classic.
