ER – Definitely some of that old school Prog-Rock that you will only get in a My5 group. Really liked the hard hitting intro. I’m starting to find a soft spot for prog rock in my later years.
HH – Ok, 1. the quality of this track is amazing, the woman’s voice and just the whole nature of the song threw me off. Not expecting anything like this from the very little amount of music I have heard from HH. From the vocal to the arrangement, this is right down my alley. This song is amazing.
ER- Groovy and bluesy from the start. I can’t believe I never heard this song before, being raised on radio during this period. Maybe it’s the brief come-downs in there or the cowbell that is too low in the mix. Good tune!
HH- OK, not what I was expecting. Alright, waiting for the piano…..Hey, that doesn’t sound like Herbie. Or Rock-It. Kinda sounds like Joni Mitchell but not. Ah….now I see. This turned out to be a surprising unexpected little taste of a Joni Mitchell cover. Full disclosure- sometimes she annoys me so this was a great portion.
I couldn’t think of her name, but yeah, I immediately thought it was Joni Mitchell. I eventually got around to listening to the full album, has a lot of women vocalists on it.
“Really Wanted You”/Emitt Rhodes. Kicky li’l tune — would have pegged it as a late-’70s release, but as it came out in ’71, I’d call it proto power pop. Really nice; will echo Al in expressing surprise I’ve never even heard of this fellow before (though it appears this track was one of his several minor hits).
“All I Want”/Herbie Hancock. Like others, I anticipate, I do not know HH’s music well, but this is not what my pitifully scant knowledge led me to expect. No fair! Anyway, highly enjoyable number. Love the acoustic guitar stylings and bubbling bass. I Google: It’s from a 2007 HH-led Joni tribute. Gosh, this singer sounds a great deal like her, but is not her (yet is also called “Mitchell,” for a last name). Great deep-cut-style pick!
Emitt Rhodes – Really Wanted You
Love the production – a great crunchy sound. Musically it’s got a great juxtaposition of beat & rhythm that’s on the edge of dissonance. Damn, it’s a sweet listen that bears repeating.
Herbie Hancock – All I Want
Have dabbled in HH’s decade- spanning catalog since I’ve been a streamer, but didn’t expect this. Hits a sweet spot – Nice collab – Not too smooth. Some great key & vocal flourishes. Like Joni run through a Rickie Lee Jones filter. Excellently enjoyable.
“Really Wanted You” by Emitt Rhodes: lots of panning and playing with the sound going on, someone really mixed this puppy. At first I though it would distract but I think they did a good job on the whole. A song by Emitt Rhodes and the mixer I think. I like the song too. It has fine rhythm and an upbeat vibe. A song that sounds like something else I have heard but I have no idea what it could be.
