  1. 5678s – First heard of this group when they featured in the movie Kill Bill. They did the woo-hoo song. (For T-Mobile commercial, I think.). I like the 60’s surfer vibe style.

TP – My first introduction to TP was MTV. There was a music video with an Egg-like car and these Mad Max/steam punk dudes got out and went into a rundown recording studio . The guitar solo was awesome at the time. Bought a couple albums and loved their videos.

  2. I’m gonna do a unified review here. For Three Cool Cats- like the song but not so keen on the version. The surfer vibe is definitely a plus but unless the vocal being indeciperable is part of its charm, I had a hard time with it. As Ian points out, its was used by Tarantino and thus may be a little tongue in cheek. My reference to this song is that The Beatles did a version of this song 1962 with original drummer Pete Best. For TP, I love the version but not the song. The drum part is just weird and halting– played well though. And damn, the rest of the band is amazing. Tom’s voice is SO good, the 12 string guitar is supersweet, and the best of the bunch is Tench’s keys. Just wow.

  3. This week’s selections have it covered.

The 5.6.7.8’s – Three Cool Chicks
A fun run through. Got that garage-y surf sound.

A fan of both the performing and original artists. Didn’t think I was super familiar with this particular song, but hearing it jogged the brain cells. As Alan noted, the organ work is superb. I’m finding this to be quite a nice ride. Well played and sung. Well chosen!

  4. “Three Cool Chicks/Cats”/5678s. Like Al, I recall the Beatles’ version of this fun tune written by the great duo of Leiber and Stoller for the Coasters. Unlike Ian and Al, I don’t recall the “Kill Bill” tune. It appears the band generally has a retro shtick going, something there always seems room for in some corner of the culture where irony and genuine delight mingle. I enjoyed the surfy flavor of this one.

  5. I am honestly not sure what to make of this. It is growing on me like a fungus. I am hearing a bit of the Get-Up in this instrumentally.

“I Want You Back Again” by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Definitely here the Zombies. That Rhodes and/or Wurly is a big stand-out to me…sweetness
