“The Way” by Fastball

An overplayed song, almost overplayed to death, but it remains the only song I like that they did. I can’t say that I have really sat down and listened to all of their works, but I remember hearing this and thinking this was an excellent song.

“Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” by The Smiths
Submitted by Alan

I have previously submitted Morrissey/The Smiths tracks with the caveat of ‘like him or not’ as it applies to Morrissey as he is a divisive figure in many ways. While some may criticize him for whining, I prefer to frame it as a deep longing. This song concisely captures that essence. The chords and melody are beatfully rendered. The lyrics are expertly crafted and the subtle changes in lyrics are powerful. All under two minutes.

Just a fine song. Those tremolo strings are kinda cool too

“Lose This Skin” by The Clash

I debated including this — one of that handful of Clash tracks on which no actual member of the Clash sings lead — because I’m aware Tymon Dogg’s voice is not for all (though he sounds a little like Geddy to me). But one re-listen convinced me I had to include it: Dogg’s hypnotic fiddle that links it to a timeless folk tradition blended with an amazing beat and lyrics yearning for transcendence. Never fails to move me. “What’s it like to be so free, so free it looks like lost to me?”

“All I Want Is You” by Roxy Music

Another I found in search of “want.” Made the cut as it just sounded the best of the lot that I had compiled from which to choose.
