Wilco, I have heard of them, but not familiar with their music. A nice easy listening song.
Clash – I would definitely say this song, particularly the singing, clashes with the previous song. I’m guessing this isn’t Joe Strummer singing! Very Irish Jig sounding. Wasn’t expecting this at all
Wilco – Jesus, etc.
I’ve heard this one a fair amount of times in the past couple of years. Wilco is a band whose catalog I have never actively pursued, but whose songs seem to make their way to my ears – and I usually like them. I remember this album being well written of upon its release. This track actually reminds me of Aztec Camera, and the Finn brothers works, a bit. Nice use of strings. It could have worked in the Not of This Earth and Spiritual rounds. Really nice mood painted here – solid pick and enjoyable tune!
The Clash – Lose This Skin
Man, I need to give Sandinista a full listen. Way to pull out a cool deep cut! This *is* a little Pogues-ish or Dexy’s Midnight Runner like, isn’t it? Ian was spot on with his jig comment (or is it a reel? – quick research points to double-jig or reel). I might have edited it a bit (might be said of the whole TRIPLE album), but that’s a quibble. Really enjoyed hearing this after it had long been buried in my musical listening history.
Pair with XTC’s Poor Skeleton 🙂
“Jesus, etc” / Wilco. I came to this album only a few years ago, but do recall this track as a standout. Interesting blend of elements, the soul-style rhythm track with the country-ish fiddle and slide guitar. Always good lyrics from these fellers. “Don’t cry, you can rely on me, honey. … You were right about the stars, each one is a setting sun.” Throwing some pizzicato in there on the final verse, and the fiddle on the last chorus is gorgeous. Turning your orbit around.
“Lose This Skin” by The Clash: I would never have guessed it was the Clash. The strings provide a very cool vibe. The vocals do not sound very clash like either. The Scott-ish sounding reverbed instrumental was nice too. I like.
